Hall is a piece of
St. George's history. Gwillym Jack Russell Evans, known as Jack, was the foundation Secretary/Treasurer of St George's Church in 1929, a position he held for many years. ("I started with a threepenny exercise book," he used to say.) Himself the possessor of a fine Welsh bass voice, Jack founded St George's Choir in 1944 with about a dozen boys and a few adults, establishing a musical tradition which continues to this day. Jack died on St Michael and All Angels Day, September 1963. His funeral was held on the very day the first materials arrived on site for the new church. A big man in every sense of the word, in commemoration of his contribution to St George's the parish hall has been named The Evans Hall. (Geoff Pitcher) In 2006 the hall was substantially refitted with completely new kitchen facilities complying with current health and safety requirements. |
