ABOUT US

St Georges is a safe space for people from all backgrounds to find friendship and deepen their faith.

St George’s began in 1929 as an outreach of St James’s, Ivanhoe. The Parish was officially formed on 1 December 1959, with the Rev. H.R. Bailey serving as the first Vicar. During his ministry from 1959 to 1961, the Parish Chapel and Hall—later named Evans Hall—were completed. From 1961 to 1968, under the leadership of the Rev. Norman Hill, plans for a new church were developed by architects Frederick Romberg and Robin Boyd and were presented on 15 May 1962. The foundation stone was laid on 8 December 1963, and the Church was dedicated by the Most Rev. Dr. Frank Woods, Archbishop of Melbourne, on 7 November 1964. Over the years, St George’s has emphasized community involvement, including the establishment of a Memorial Garden and various environmental initiatives such as the Water Saving Project and the Solar Panel Project. Worship at St George’s follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition and is known for its high standard of music in the liturgy, which has consistently attracted parishioners from beyond the local area.

Our Faith

  • We believe in God, the awe-inspiring and captivating nature of His holiness; our connectedness with Him and each other; and caring for those in need.
  • Our vision is to make and sustain connections: with God, with one another, with the local and wider community, and with the environment.
  •  We value liturgical worship; growing fellowship and community outreach.

Our Worship

We celebrate Anglo-Catholic worship and our musical heritage with choir and organ.

Historically many of St George’s parishioners have lived outside the Parish bounds. The Anglo-Catholic style of worship and the high standard of music in the liturgy have been the draw cards. St George’s is surrounded by evangelical parishes and so can offer a spiritual home to those who seek the Anglo-Catholic style of worship.

We use A Prayer Book for Australia and The Australian Hymn Book. We celebrate the services of:

  • Sunday 8.00 a.m. Holy Communion;
  • Sunday 10.00 a.m. Choral Eucharist with organ accompaniment;
  • Wednesday 10.00 a.m. Holy Communion;
  • Choral Evensong 5pm approximately 6 times per year
  • Jazz Vespers 5pm 3 times per year
  • Special services at Passiontide, Advent and Christmas;
  • Friday 00 am Holy Communion at Benetas The Views, Heidelberg.
