{"id":636,"date":"2015-01-22T13:34:54","date_gmt":"2015-01-22T03:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stgeorgeseastivanhoe.org\/wordpress\/?p=636"},"modified":"2015-01-22T13:34:54","modified_gmt":"2015-01-22T03:34:54","slug":"from-bishop-philip-huggins-australia-day-amnesty-for-manus-island-detainees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stgeorgeseastivanhoe.org\/wordpress\/from-bishop-philip-huggins-australia-day-amnesty-for-manus-island-detainees\/","title":{"rendered":"From Bishop Philip Huggins:  Australia Day amnesty for Manus Island detainees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Australia Day amnesty for Manus Island detainees<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A statement from Bishop Philip Huggins, Chair, General Synod Migrant and Refugee Group, Anglican Church of Australia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Australia Day is an opportunity to take a one-off and uplifting initiative: declare an amnesty for those now in the Manus Island Detention Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Bring to Australia those found to be refugees.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers are relatively small &#8211; something around 1000 men is the figure quoted in a world of 50 million displaced people.<\/p>\n<p>Most have come from places of persecution and suffering.<\/p>\n<p>Some have been detained for 18 months without there being a welcoming transition into PNG society.<\/p>\n<p>Most are young and motivated to make a better life &#8211; just like those who followed the First Fleet.<\/p>\n<p>The Manus Island arrangement is plainly not working.
