It was broadcast on Friday, June 12.<\/p>\n<p>He told Philippa Hitchen that much of the discussion about border operations is considered \u201calmost a matter of military intelligence\u201d with details being withheld from the public arena. He said the claim that the government paid smugglers was \u201ca remarkable allegation\u201d and said \u201cwe\u2019d all be helped by greater transparency about how these policies are being carried out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Freier, conceding that his might be a minority voice on asylum seekers, reiterated that it was \u201cmorally reprehensible\u201d for immigrant children to be kept in detention \u201cfor any longer than is necessary\u201d. Children are still in detention in off-shore facilities.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was surprised that the Australian people \u201cseem willing to accept these things being done in their name\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really need to address issues as to what motivates people to leave their own country.
